Shortly after my dad was killed on 9/11, I went to Coventry Cathedral. By the altar in the ruined cathedral, under the charred cross, there was a prayer, the Litany Of Reconciliation. It's been part of my story, and my journey ever since.
The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class,
Father forgive.
The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own,
Father, forgive.
The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth,
Father, forgive.
Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others,
Father, forgive.
Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee,
Father, forgive.
The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children,
Father, forgive.
The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God,
Father, forgive.
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
lyrics
For the hatred that divides us
Race from race and class from class
And the covetous desire
For things that are not ours
For the greed that takes advantage
And for laying waste the earth
Father forgive
Father forgive
Father forgive
For our envy of our neighbour
And their good fortune that we see
For our indifference to the captive
The homeless and the refugee
For the lust that brings dishonour
And the pride that steals our peace
Father Forgive
Father Forgive
Father Forgive
Be kind to one another
And tender in your heart
Forgiving one another
As Christ forgave you
